Blue Star Cafe in Hasland, Chesterfield, embodies the classic British neighborhood cafe experience. This is the kind of place where comfort, familiarity, and straightforward home-cooked food are the main draws. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, with a sense of community that comes from decades of regulars, some of whom have been visiting for over 40 years. It’s less about polished presentation and more about feeling like part of a local routine.

Visitors to Blue Star can expect generous portion sizes and hearty breakfasts, making it an ideal stop for those wanting a proper meal in a casual setting rather than something fancy or trendy. The owners and staff, led by Ken, bring a genuine warmth that helps the place feel like a second home for many. Conversations with the staff tend to have a personal touch, as Ken is known for catering uniquely to each customer, even down to how your tea is served.

The cafe’s charm lies in its straightforward approach: no frills, just good food served with familiarity. Because Ken and the team have an older style of running things, some visitors notice that attentiveness can vary and the decor and cleanliness might not meet modern cafe expectations. However, for those who prefer a relaxed, lived-in environment where you’re treated like family rather than just a customer, it fits the bill well.

Blue Star is best visited in the morning or early afternoon when locals pop in for breakfast or a midday meal. It attracts a mix of regulars who appreciate the predictability and warmth, as well as newcomers seeking a glimpse of a longstanding community staple in Hasland. It’s not a place for a quick coffee or a stylish meet-up, but rather a spot to settle in, enjoy simple food, and soak up an atmosphere that reflects decades of local life.

Good home cooked food, relaxed atmosphere, Ken, Margaret and Ann treat you like family. If you want fancy, don't go, if you want to enjoy your meal, you won't beat it

Blue Star Cafe offers a casual dining atmosphere but has room for improvement. While the service is generally friendly, there are concerns about cleanliness, as the cafe appears not to be very well maintained. Additionally, the staff, who are older, may sometimes be less attentive to details. For example, when requested for paper towel, the response was unusually specific, with exactly five pieces provided. Despite these issues, the cafe’s location and overall menu may still appeal to some diners.

Been coming here for 42 years, and must say it’s been a pleasure to have been served by such a gentleman in Ken. I’m sorry to see this place close from Saturday 1st March, due to Ken’s illness. For anyone that doesn’t know, Ken is fighting Prostrate Cancer and he isn’t well at all. I wish Ken all the very best and think it’s fair to say all of his customers wish him the same. It’s the end of an era sadly

Hi there , if you want "the greasy spoon cafe" , then Ken is your man , they threw threw the mould away after they made this man! He caters "in his own way " to every customer he gets ! He deserves all the praise he can get , as far as I'm concerned, he even puts your Sugar in your tea and asks if it's to your liking ! This man is a long gone hero of life ! I wish him all the very best in life , he is a no- nonsense honest trying person , albeit not Mrs. Buckets cup of tea! All the best Ken.

Don't let the shabby look of this place put you off, it's a good, honest, traditional English café with brilliant home cooked food, the best in all Chesterfield in my opinion. The prices are the lowest you'll find anywhere too.
